Constructed 1882

The Plaza Hotel was built in 1882, after a successful business partnership and investment group led by Benigno Romero. The hotel is the finest example of Italian Renaissance Revival architecture in New Mexico and probably the Southwest. The dominant formal facade with its broken central cornice parapet is a striking feature. The Plaza Hotel has gone through many owners during its long life. One owner Byron T. Mills, is said to remain in the hotel, a ghostly reminder of the boomtown days. More recently, William and Kaka Slick entered into a partnership with the Lucero family in 1980 and completed a $1 million renovation of the property, which restored the upstairs guest rooms, the dining room, lobby and bar. In 2010, William Slick purchased the next door Charles Ilfeld Mercantile building, a massive Italianate building and developed more guest rooms and a ballroom. In 2014, Arizona hotelier Allan Affeldt acquired the Plaza Hotel, along with the Castaneda Hotel with plans to restore the latter and improve the former. The Plaza Hotel remains one of the Southwest’s outstanding historic hotel properties, hosting weddings, receptions, concerts, and many other events throughout the year.
