NOB HILL, ABQ—Starting this Saturday, I will be blogging on Route 66 as my buddy Mike Moye and I ride down that venerable highway on our bicycles. We’re getting a ride to the Arizona state line Saturday morning and then we’ll head back east. The first night we’ll just make Gallup, about 20 miles. Our route then diverges from 66 to go southward to Zuni Pueblo, Ramah, El Morro, Grants, and Albuquerque. We’ll take the RailRunner up to Santa Fe before continuing east to Pecos, Las Vegas, down to Santa Rosa, Tucumcari, San Jon, and finally Glenrio on the Texas border.
The 50,000 member Adventure Cycling Association, in their online newsletter called Bike Bits, was kind enough to mention our adventure and the interest of New Mexico’s Mainstreet program in welcoming bicycle travelers to the communities of our expansive and beautiful state. This truly is the Land of Enchantment and I have no doubt that cyclists will understand that motto of ours in short order.
I will start blogging in Gallup, a town that should be known as the art capital of the United States since, per capita, it contains more people who make their living from one art form or another than anywhere else in America.
Oh, I’ve been spending some time in training for the ride. I did my last training ride yesterday: a loaded 34 miler, punctuated with a cup of coffee and a ranch breakfast at the Flying Star in Corrales. Now it’s time to pack. See you on the road!
