A few years ago I visited Las Vegas, NM with a couple of friends. We stayed in the Plaza Hotel and while waiting to head out for dinner I looked through the guest information book on the desk in my room. While browsing stories about the hotel I laughed out loud when I saw that they had a ghost, and that I was staying in the “ghost room.”

At dinner I told my friends about the ghost. I assumed that the books were written so that everyone had a ghost in their room. But, I was wrong. When we got back to our rooms, they checked their books, then scurried up to my room and let me know that indeed – I and I alone had the ghost.

(Sorry folks, I can’t remember what room number it was, but looking online, it appears to be room 310.)

The ghost is Byron Mills, a former owner of the hotel. People say that he is friendly and prefers to interact with women. (Wonder if it was the same when he was alive!) He has been known to move things around, sit on the bed and even sometimes smoke a cigar in the room.

I am not a believer in ghosts and nothing that night changed my mind.

No bumps in the night.

Nothing scary.

No presence in the room.

No cigars.

Just a good night’s sleep.

Apparently, that is not always the case.

So if you are interested in a little ghost hunting, head on over to the Plaza Hotel in Las Vegas, NM and see if Byron shows up for your stay!

Robyne Beaubien is the NM MainStreet Promotions Program Associate. Growing up she wanted to be a celebrity chef, but scrapped that plan after figuring out she was better at band-aid application and fire alarm testing than cooking. In her early twenties, she started working with churches and other non-profits creating marketing products and events. That evolved into developing programming, implementation plans, marketing strategies, and training leaders, as well as speaking at events and conferences. 25 years later, she is still speaking, writing, training and working with non-profits, churches, and small businesses. Robyne says that she loves helping each unique organization find new ways to tell their story. She currently works mainly with MainStreet organizations in image development, event development, and media relations. She is a certified National Main Street Manager and has spoken at three National Main Street Conferences. In her spare time, Robyne is a DIY junkie and has never met a piece of furniture, or a wall, that she didn't want to paint.
