At the turn of the Twentieth century, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railroad was looking for a new route over the mountains of New Mexico. It built a bypass from Belen to Texico, and used existing lines to join its mainline in Kansas. The Clovis depot was built in 1907 and was a pivotal building in the founding of Clovis that same year. The Clovis depot grew rapidly, serving as the division point offices, a passenger station and a boarding station for Santa Fe railroad work crews. A Harvey House hotel was built adjacent. Today, the Belen cut-off line remains one of the BNSF’s most heavily used routes. The depot has been rehabilitated to its 1950s appearance and houses the Clovis Depot Model Train Museum.
