Charles Motel and Spa

South Region

Constructed 1938

The Charles is made up of two historical buildings. The Spa building, constructed in the late 1940s, and The Charles Apartments, built in the late 1930s, sit side-by-side on Broadway, awaiting the arrival of guests who venture to the southwest for a relaxing getaway, or on a quest for healing, or even who just had to stop in a town called Truth or Consequences. The real joy of the Charles Spa and Motel lies in the mineral rich water that flows from the ground beneath the facility, arriving in the Charles' baths at a piping 112 degrees fahrenheit. This incredible water has been used in healing for centuries.
Constructed between 1938 and 1940 by Charles Lockhart, a local developer, the Charles Motel and Bathhouse represents one of the best preserved hot spring motels in Truth or Consequences. Historically, it offered a full range of health service amenities, including massages, colonies, electric therapy, sauna and sitz baths and health slenderizing salons. For health-seekers remaining in Hot Springs for extended visits, it also offered a beauty shop and a sewing center for dress making.
