Distrito de Las Escuelas Historic District

North Region

Constructed 1870

The neighborhood immediately south of the Las Vegas Plaza was home to some of the first schools in the New Mexico Territory, and is named District of the Schools in Spanish. The Sisters of Loretto established an Academy here that educated generations of youngsters during the Territorial period. The Santa Fe Trail exited the plaza along the west side of the district and many older adobe homes retain traditional linear or courtyard house plans. Mercantile titan Charles Ilfeld built a handsome territorial mansion in the neighborhood where early silent film star Romaine Feilding shot several scenes of his film The Rattlesnake. The district is still home to West Las Vegas High School.
