Constructed 1928.
The 460-seat El Morro Theater opened in 1928, featuring a Spanish Colonial Revival exterior. The El Morro was named for the famous El Morro rock cliff near Zuni Pueblo also called “Inscription Rock.” The theater was designed by the Boller Brothers architectural firm of Kansas, who designed over 100 cinemas and movie palaces in the the Midwest in the early and mid-Twentieth Century. The El Morro is one of four Boller Brothers theaters in New Mexico, along the KiMo in Albuquerque, the Lensic in Santa Fe, and the Lyceum in Clovis. The El Morro was substantially rehabilitated by the Kauzlaric family in 1991, and acquired by the City of Gallup in 2003. The theater has undergone more renovations upgrading restroom facilities and seating. The theater is a performing arts venue and in 2014, the City is building an annex black box theater on an adjacent site to complement the historic theater.
