Constructed 1880
After the Civil War, the prosperity of the Santa Fe Trail enabled the village of Las Vegas to expand out of the plaza vicinity. New adobe homes were built along the hillside near Our Lady of Sorrows Church and the Presbyterian mission church to the south. Some prosperous merchants such as Margarito Romero would build substantial mansions near the church reflecting their worldly and spiritual aspirations. As Las Vegas grew with the railroad and an explosive mercantile economy was established, the neighborhoods west of the plaza filled with homes and streets that hugged the hilly terrain. Some wealthier families modernized their adobe homes with Victorian gingerbread style wooden accents that produced interesting cultural and architectural hybrid homes. The Old Town Residential neighborhood retains strong cultural characteristics that interpret New Mexico of more than a century past.
