The KiMo Theatre is one of our Albuquerque’s finest treasures and is home to a variety of dance, music, film, theater, cinema and more. The KiMo was opened on September 19, 1927 with an original seating capacity of 1,321. A contest selected the name, which means King of its kind in a Pueblo dialect. One of the premier examples of the Pueblo Deco style, a fusion of Art Deco forms and Pueblo motifs, the KiMo is well-preserved by the City of Albuquerque as one of the country’s outstanding examples of movie palace architecture. The KiMo was threatened with demolition in 1977, but ultimately was acquired by the City of Albuquerque. The theater was restored in September 2000, and a recent project (2012) has restored the original vertical mast marquee.
